Hello all. I am in the process of clearing out things I'm not using and don't need, and I have 3 devices that I would hope can be of some use to someone else. Cosmetically, they are like new, but they all need some degree of repair to be fully useable. I believe they can be repaired, or maybe they could be used for parts. The companies don't want them back, and neither do my state's school for the blind or Division for Blind Services. What I have:
* BrailleNoteClassic 18. It includes the BrailleNote, carrying case with strap, and charger. Also if desired, I can include a cf card. The BrailleNote works well but only when plugged in, so it would need a new battery.
* A floppy disk drive that could be used with the BrailleNote. It has a flat card-like part that plugs into it. This device also comes with the charger. However, there is a floppy disk stuck in the device that I couldn't take back out.
* Braille 'n Speak Scholar. This comes in it's original packaging and includes the Braille 'n Speak Scholar, carrying case with strap, charger, documentation in braille and print and on CD and cassette, earbuds, and a cable to connect it to other devices. It is completely dead however, but I learned that it may be able to be repaired.
Being that they don't work fully or at all, I am willing to send any or all of these devices and accessories to whoever can use them and will even pay shipping if it is in the States or Canada. It would just honestly bother me to throw them in the trash, and I can't imagine these things going to a landfill if there is a possibility of someone or someplace that could use them even if it's just for parts. If noone here can use them, if you know of someone or someplace who can or where I could send them for recycling, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
Sean Whalen, who's the former president of the national association of blind students works/worked for an organization that needed braille things. I'm sure that I can get his email to you, and that he would take these items.
Or, I'll take the braille note. I'd love to have that, even if it needs a new
battery.
Awesome! Thank you for the quick response and interest. I will get in touch with the both of you then. *smile*
I also have a pacmate qwerty. No braille display I gave that away while ago.
Our university could use a Braille Display. Does the BrailleNote classic still support Jaws on Win 10? or 7? I'd imagine not. Good luck.
Yeah not sure up to what version of JAWS a BN Classic would support; I used to use it with NVDA.
The BrailleNote is gone now. I still have the other items left though.
What's left, I forget.
I still have the floppy disk drive that is used with a BrailleNote and a Braille 'n Speak Scholar left.
And, the BrailleNSpeak does not work at all?
No. That's why I don't want to sell these things. I'm thinking it's the battery that's dead, but it won't even charge, so I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I figured someone who might be interested in older-style notetakers might want it to get it fixed for themselves or for parts or something. Weirdly, it is pretty much like new cosmetically, no scratches on the machine or tears in the case. It is just dead for whatever reason.
Unfortunately, I have no use for that type of device, nor do I understand how to fix them. If the battery is indeed depleted, Ebay might prove the best source for locating parts, especially since FS most likely does not repair these units any longer. There is a girl on here who is interested in older tech. For some reason, I do not recollect her name, but she goes by Tiffanitza or something. Good luck.
I'd love a BNS, but couldn't afford the cost of fixing it. Sorry.
Blessings,
Sarah
I don't even know if anyone is around who would be able to repair the Braille 'n Speak since it' such ancient technology. The internal storage on that thing is laughable anyway.
